ASSURE Lesson Plan

ED452G: ASSURE Lesson Plan
Group Delta:
Gem Boyd, Hannah Galura, and Johnmyre Zapanta

Topic/Content:
Using three different types of cereal  brands, students will create a spreadsheet to compare and contrast the calories, fat, fiber, salt, and sugar content.  Students will use Google Sheets to create various charts depicting the calories, fat, salt, and sugar content of each cereal brand with a final analysis identifying which is the healthiest.

Theoretical Frameworks (Optional):
Collaborative Learning: (student-centered activities, socially constructed learning process)
CLT (communicative language teaching): use of all 4 modalities – listening, speaking, reading, writing

Analyze Learners
The students/learners are 25, 7th grade middle school students from the island of Guam.

General Characteristics:
There are 25 students with beginning-intermediate degrees of computer skills.

Entry Competencies:
Students have been introduced to several presentation tools such as Weebly, Wix, Prezi, Google Slides, Google Sheets, and Google Docs. Each student already has an email account with Gmail.  They have had previous lessons on creating a personal website.  Students will use their prior knowledge with technology tools to achieve the lesson objectives.

Learning styles:
Based on previous group activities and teacher observation, students have exhibited different learning styles such as auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.  One particular group includes a special needs student with hearing impairment.  Accommodations will be made to ensure this particular student reaches the objectives.

State Objectives:

Given 5 cereal brands, students will be able to :
  • Identify the amount of calories, fat, fiber, salt, and sugar using the food label on each cereal box with 80% accuracy.
  • Create a spreadsheet  and charts using Google Sheets with 80% accuracy.
  • Compare and contrast the data using the charts from Google Sheets with 80% accuracy.
  • Determine the healthiest cereal brand  based on the recommended daily allowance (RDA) with 80% accuracy.
  • Create a website using Weebly or Wix to display collected information and analyzed data with 80% accuracy.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
The activities will be performed in groups of 5.  Each group will be given five different cereal brands (Honey Nut Cheerios, Rice Chex, Kashi Go Lean Crisp!, Special K Gluten-free, and Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds).  Each student per group will be assigned one cereal brand to collect data and must submit information to the group leader.  Additionally, each student will be given a laptop to input and share their data. The group leader will input the collected data from each cereal brand to create a chart on Google Sheets.  The group leader will share analyzed data with the rest of the group members through Google Sheets. Finally, each will group will then create a website to display the collected information and analyzed data to present the healthiest cereal brand based on the RDA.

Utilize Materials and Media
Preview Materials: The teacher will have previously identified the healthiest cereal brand based on analyzed data.
Prepare the Materials: In preparation of the lesson, the teacher purchases 5 different kinds of cereal brands.  The teacher will reserve the school’s student laptop mobile carts for the entire lesson.
Prepare the Environment: Seating arrangements will be prepared in groups of 5.  Each student will be issued a laptop to complete the project.
Prepare the Learners: The teacher models how to locate the food label on a cereal box.  As a whole group activity, the teacher projects a sample of a food label retrieved from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and explains how to read the food label.  Teacher discusses the objectives for the lesson and how it relates to this multimedia lesson plan project.  Teacher will place students in groups of 5.

Accommodations for special needs student (hearing impairment):
The special needs student will be placed in a group that includes a model classmate who will provide peer support to complete assigned tasks.  The teacher will frequently check for understanding.  During teacher instruction, the teacher will clearly enunciate speech and give 1:1 instruction to obtain the student’s attention and simplify directions in a sequential manner.  The student will be given extra time to complete assigned tasks.  Teacher will utilize any available assistive technology such as speech to text, video captions, etc.
Provide the Learning Experience: This project is student-centered. The teacher is a facilitator and monitors each group’s progress throughout the lesson to provide feedback and guidance.
Require Student Participation: 80 minutes

Time                         Activity
1.  12 mins                 Introducing of activities:
  • Referencing: What are the acceptable amounts of calories, fiber, fat sugars, and salts for daily intake based on the nutritional value and food pyramid? Can these values be met in breakfast cereals that are eaten?
  • Students will be introduced to the five cereals and broken into groups of 5.
2.  10 mins                 Explanation of assignment and tasks:
  • Students will select group leader and assign tasks for each person.
  • Google Spreadsheets will be opened and teacher will explain to class as a whole about the program.
  • Teacher will monitor each group as they work on the document on their respective computers.
3.  12 mins              Small Group Collaboration:
  • Students will input data from each cereal box on the nutritional facts:
  • Calories
  • Fat
  • Fiber
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Students will then refer to daily nutritional value to those listed on the cereal boxes.
  • Compare content from all sources and discuss if this cereal meets or does not meet these standards.
4.  15 mins              Group Data Compilation and Presentation Creation:
  • Students will share data from each cereal with one another and each group will make a chart conveying the information.
  • Each group will create a Bar Graph, Line Graph, and Circle Graph with the data from the cereals.
  • Additionally, information from the recommended Daily Nutritional Value will also be made for comparison purposes.
  • Information will then be uploaded to the website of their choice.
5. 10 mins              Evaluate/reflect
·      Students will evaluate and transcribe which cereal is considered the “healthiest” based on the daily nutritional values.
·      Reflect on the importance of following these guidelines for overall physical wellness.
6. 21  mins             Application and Closing Activities
  • Students will be given four minutes each to explain to the class and teacher their findings of the calories, fat, fiber, salt, and sugar of these cereals.
  • After presentations teacher will engage students discussion on how the use of media tools and information can be related to classes such as Science, Math, Physical Education, etc.
  • As students exit they must complete and exit ticket containing 3 things they learned, 2 things they want to know more about, and 1 thing they were unsure about or could improve for the next activity.
Evaluate and Revise (lesson plan, teaching strategy, etc.)
Ongoing evaluation should occur as activity progresses.
Create rubric for each group to use to assess the presentation and website preparation.
